Happy New Year

Happy New Year to you all.

What do you think of it all then? Me, I long for the carefree happy days of my yoof, down the pub, a bit crowded but OK. A few drinks, a few snogs and off home to sleep it off. Nowadays, you have to book in advance if you want to go to the pub and buy a ticket (buffet included!) for £20. You can't avoid it either as there will be fireworks at midnight to wake you from your slumber.

As for Christmas.....I'm not a fan of it. Don't get me wrong here, I love the IDEA of Christmas, but the reality somehow never stacks up. You see, it's all about enjoying yourself, and if you are not enjoying yourself, then there is something wrong. BUT, in order for some people to have what they want, other people have to give up what they want. For example if my parents want us to go on Christmas Day, then Mrs Bs parents can't have the day with us as well. So some get and some don't. I am a soft pushover really, so I always end up compromising on what I want to do so other people can have what they want. Therefore it is my fault I don't enjoy Christmas.

I would like to go away for Christmas - somewhere hot and sunny, but that will never happen as too many other people insist we have Christmas right here.

I did get my mate to come over for Christmas, and he brought his imaginary dog Tippy. Tippy is only just continent so requires lots of walks. A great strategy which worked really well and will be used again.

Anyway, don't wish to moan on about it and it's over now for the next 8 months. Check out the supermarket shelves next August if you don't believe me!

(PS Pounce then!)

Ha. Consider yourself pounced upon, Mr Boris.

Och, I can't really be bothered with any of it. Even when I used to drink, I found the pressure to "enjoy" myself at Hogmanay next to unbearable. There is something in the near frenzied insistence that everyone is going to have fun that really hurts me. I just find it impossible. Ditto for Christmas.

You're right, the idea is beautiful. Really beautiful, in fact. The reality, however, rarely makes itself indistinguishable from happiness. If my girlfriend goes to spend Christmas with her mum and step-father, I stay at home alone - preferring the space and peace to the prospect of having to engage in a tit-for-tat thing whereby my own mother will have a claim on me the following year ("you went to Charlotte's mum's for Christmas last year....do you not love me or something?") That kind of thing.

It leaves me cold, Boris, all of it. If you ever find yourself in a position to spend Christmas Day entirely alone - try it. Trust me, it is next to impossible to find anything to celebrate, which sort of goes to prove that the day itself is really nothing special in the first place, merely an exercise in communal delusion (not that there's anything wrong with that, of course.)

I do try to smile, however, on those occasions I spend the season with my girlfriend. I'm not all bad, clearly.

But yes, the snogging thing at New Year. I used to really enjoy that. It seemed so exciting and randomly debauched. Getting momentarily frisky with a complete stranger is still something I would recommend to anyone. It's terrific fun.

God. I miss it. (Depressed now.)

Happy New Year, Mr B. It's going to be the best year ever. Good to see you up and about (in a blogging sense), too.

Kind regards etc....

Hello TPE.

How nice to hear from you again. Christmas on ones own could be good. Maybe on day in the future I will try it.
